Professor istorii Instituta Vostoka Chikagskogo universiteta Alʹbert Olmsted, posviativ svoiu zhiznʹ izucheniiu drevnego Blizhnego Vostoka, sobral ranee neizvestnyĭ material o zhizni, vremenakh i myshlenii persov v tselʹnoe povestvovanie. Imenno Persiia na protiazhenii dvukh vekov — ot rasprostraneniia tsarem Kirom Velikim vlasti na Gretsiiu i do sozhzheniia Persepolia, stolitsy tsarstva, Aleksandrom Velikim — zanimala zavidnoe polozhenie diktatora istorii. V svoeĭ knige avtor pokazyvaet, kak nauka, literatura, iazyk i mify drevnikh vyrosli iz smesheniia mnogikh kulʹtur i sposobstvovali formirovaniiu budushcheĭ tsivilizatsii.
Albert Olmsted, professor of History at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Chicago, devoted his life to the study of the ancient Near East, collected previously unknown material about the life, times and thinking of the Persians into a whole narrative. It was Persia that for two centuries — from the spread of power by Tsar Cyrus the Great to Greece and before the burning of Persepolis, the capital of the kingdom, by Alexander the Great — occupied an enviable position of dictator of history. In his book, the author shows how science, literature, language and myths of the ancients grew out of the mixing of many cultures and contributed to the formation of a future civilization.
