The author of this book has been researching the circumstances of the death of the surrounded group of troops of the 33rd Army under the command of Lieutenant General M.G. Efremov for more than 20 years. In the course of his work, he was lucky enough to communicate with the last direct participants in this tragedy and witnesses of the incident from among the local residents.Based on archival materials of the operational departments of the headquarters of the Western Front and the 33rd Army, as well as enemy documents found in the NARA archive (USA), the author literally by the hour reconstructs the picture of events that occurred during the breakthrough of the 33rd Army units from the encirclement on April 14-19, 1942. Much attention is paid in the book to the personality of the commander of the 33rd Army, Lieutenant General M.G. Efremov, the circumstances of his death and burial by the enemy. The book presents the unique memories of the commanders and Red Army soldiers of the 33rd army, many of whom, during the breakout from the encirclement, found themselves in enemy captivity and, having passed all the circles of hell of the Fascist concentration camps, told about this tragedy many years after the war.
