Vertical Racing (1974) is one of the most famous works of the Weiner brothers. And at the same time - almost unknown: being filmed, the novel was partially obscured by the film of the same name (1982), in which such popular actors as Andrei Myagkov and Valentin Gaft played. The film preserved mainly the external plot: the story of the confrontation between the investigator Stas Tikhonov and the thief Lehi Dedushkin, nicknamed Baton. The struggle of justice with lawlessness, diligence with parasitism, good with evil... Behind this straightforward formula in the book live two far from schematic antagonist heroes with their doubts, despair, loneliness. Thanks to the dialogical construction of the narrative, the authors give the floor equally to both sides. The image of Baton is especially interesting — a smart, charming, tormented "parasite and renegade". Readers will also meet with the famous hero from the "Meeting Place cannot be changed" - Sharapov, who has now become Lieutenant Colonel Moore. The publication also includes the novel "Groping at Noon" (1968). It was after its publication that wide recognition came to the Weiners. Yu. Nagibin called the novel "a fresh word in the development of the detective genre."
