S pervoĭ zhe stranitsy voznikaet i oshchushchenie, chto zlo sovsem riadom, – po mneniiu Dzhekson, ono taitsia v dushakh liudeĭ, pogriazshikh v predrassudkakh i zhestokosti. IArche vsego predchuvstvie uzhasa proiavliaetsia v zaglavnom rasskaze, 'Lotereia', kotoryĭ stal klassikoĭ amerikanskoĭ novellistiki KhKh veka i trizhdy byl ėkranizirovan.
Shirley Jackson was called 'the only practicing witch among modern writers'. And in fact, from her stories breathes some 'devilishness': in the labyrinths of plots, absurdity and mystery are whimsically mixed, creating a 'somnambulistic' atmosphere that is not like anything else, where it is difficult to distinguish reality from fiction. From the first page, there is also a sense that evil is very close – in Jackson's opinion, it lurks in the souls of people who are mired in prejudice and cruelty. The most vivid premonition of horror is shown in the title story, 'Lottery', which became a classic of American short stories of the twentieth century and was adapted three times.
