«Ona znala: pora... Nikto ne uslyshal krika, prorezavshego vozdukh, nikto ne uvidel chernuiu figuru zhenshchiny-ptitsy, melʹknuvshuiu, kak meteor, sredi nochi». Shkola potriasena samoubiĭstvom uchitelʹnitsy Ėlʹzy Vaĭs, o kotoroĭ nikomu pochti nichego ne izvestno. Taĭna ee zhizni i smerti mnogie gody ne daet pokoia byvsheĭ uchenitse. I 30 let spustia ona nachinaet sobstvennoe rassledovanie. Itogom stanovitsia glubokiĭ roman, na stranitsakh kotorogo v perepletenii vymysla i realʹnosti voznikaet mrachnyĭ portret zagadochnoĭ geroini. «Uchitelʹnitsa» (Priz «Sapir» 2016) — neobychnyĭ roman o Kholokoste. Ėto razmyshlenie o tragicheskoĭ sudʹbe zhenshchiny, dlia kotoroĭ spasenie ot natsistov obernulosʹ prokliatiem vechnoĭ viny.
"She knew it was time... No one heard the cry that cut through the air, no one saw the black figure of a bird-woman flash like a meteor in the middle of the night." The school is shocked by the suicide of teacher Elsa Weiss, about whom almost nothing is known. The mystery of her life and death for many years haunts the former student. And 30 years later, she starts her own investigation. The result is a deep novel, on the pages of which a dark portrait of a mysterious heroine appears in the interweaving of fiction and reality. The teacher (Sapir prize 2016) is an unusual novel about the Holocaust. The characters of Ben-Naftali are not heroes or martyrs, but those who escaped the concentration camps and became victims of their own conformism. This is a reflection on the tragic fate of a woman for whom salvation from the Nazis turned into a curse of eternal guilt.
