Gerhart Hauptman is a popular German writer, playwright and poet who gained wide fame not only in Europe, but also in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. The drama 'Before Sunrise' tells the story of a farming family that got rich selling coal. Hoffmann Krause will soon have an heir. To help her pregnant sister, Elena returns to her parents' house and is horrified: financial well-being has led the Krause family to degeneration and alcoholism. Suddenly, Hoffman is visited by a friend of his youth, Alfred Lot, a staunch teetotaler and intellectual, with whom, it seems, Elena will be able to escape from the hated village.
