The famous writer of the late XIX — early XX century Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin attentively notices and vividly describes in his stories the characteristic signs of the time, which makes his works not only a whirlpool of images and situations, but also a kind of encyclopedia of Russian life at the turn of the century. This collection covers life in all its diversity, and many ironically played out topics, such as superstition, gossip, family squabbles, poverty and misery, bureaucracy, ostentation in charity and widespread drunkenness, resonate in readers even now. Scenes typical of that period are also played out: the relations of the impoverished nobility and the new masters of life — merchants. Ridiculed, although rather kindly, the limitations of the latter and the desire to solve any problem with money - for example, to buy the main role in a play.
