Vladimir Obruchev is a world—renowned Soviet scientist, geographer, geologist, researcher of Siberia and Central Asia. However, he is known to a wide circle primarily as the author of science fiction and adventure novels that have entered the treasury of Soviet literature. The idea of Plutonia (1924) was born in Obruchev after reading Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, a fascinating novel that does not stand up to criticism from a scientific point of view. And Vladimir Afanasievich, although he did not believe in the "hollow Earth" hypothesis, decided to write a book with a similar plot, only freed from absurdities. The second novel, "The Land of Sannikov" (1926), was based on another scientific hypothesis, which seemed more realistic to the scientist. In 1811, St. John's Wort Yakov Sannikov discovered the "vast land", a real oasis in the East Siberian Sea. This gave reason to think that the land was warm and fertile, perhaps due to volcanoes. A group of pioneers is sent to explore this land. The adventure novel "Gold Diggers in the Desert" (1949) takes the reader to the Dzungarian mountains, rich in gold-bearing quartz. It is not easy to extract the precious metal, and it is even more difficult to protect the loot — after all, the action takes place in the 19th century on the western outskirts of the Chinese empire, experiencing difficult times of civil wars, uprisings and troubles. The present edition also includes the novel "Coral Island" (1947). Like "Plutonium", it is also a kind of tribute to the talent of Jules Verne. Only now does the crew of an American military seaplane arrive on the mysterious island, flying to Pearl Harbor, which was attacked by the Japanese.…The design of the publication uses illustrations by George Nikolsky and works by European and American artists.
