How did the "conservative turn" of the 2010s affect the transformation of the historical spaces of ancient Russian cities? Why are certain historical plots important for regional actors in the context of memory politics? Do local elites manage to tell about the identity and subjectivity of the region, or does its past remain an echo of national history? This book is the result of a study of 12 regional capitals conducted in 2020-2022. The author's task was to "map" the processes of public use of history and to understand how the historical and symbolic spaces of provincial cities - memorial complexes and institutions, monuments and museums — are being developed today. The study demonstrates how an appeal to the past, on the one hand, expresses the value foundations of the Russian nation, and on the other hand, it is used to justify authoritarian models of government. In 2025, the first edition of the book was supposed to be published in Russia, but due to the rise of the quasi-Orthodox movement "Forty Forty", the print run was stopped.
