The essay devoted to the history of immigrants from Scandinavian countries in the Mediterranean was first published in 1889. The author, a well-known German poet and cultural historian, gave in it a vivid description of the Viking age, the ways in which the Northerners got to continental Europe, the Mediterranean and North America.
