He mostly communicates only with his neighbor, a bachelor fisherman named Aslake. Occasionally, he has conversations with another artist suffering from alcohol addiction, whose name is also Asle. Both Asle are friends and in a sense represent two versions of the same life. On Christmas Eve, one of them finds the other in a snowdrift.
