ILLEGAL CONSUMPTION OF NARCOTIC DRUGS, PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES, AND THEIR ANALOGUES IS HARMFUL TO HEALTH, AND THEIR ILLICIT TRAFFICKING IS PROHIBITED AND ENTAILS LIABILITY ESTABLISHED BY LAW.Ithaca, New York, mid-1950s. Elaine stands at the mailbox in front of the house, thinks about her son and husband, a teacher at a prestigious university, and thinks wistfully: “Is this really all?” Trying to push the rigid limits that limit her existence, she embarks on a disastrous love story that will end her marriage and ruin her life. Will Self's novel is based on his mother's diaries, which she kept for more than forty years. The writer intently examines Elaine's inner world, straining his imagination to recreate a picture of her life.
