Inspector Ben Ross is called to Newgate Prison. This is the last request of convict James Mills. Before he dies, he wants to relieve his soul and reports a murder he witnessed sixteen years ago. Ross fails to postpone Mills' execution and pursue this murder. He is assigned the case of the kidnapping of the wife and daughter of a wealthy London wine merchant. But Lizzie, Ross's wife, who often takes part in her husband's investigations, goes to the archive because she is sure that Mills told the truth and, therefore, the killer is still at large.
