Pascal, a timid girl with a man's name, lives in a small seaside town, bound by the chains of local traditions that oblige her to marry and provide for her parents' old age. She cannot escape, feeling how the city, shrouded in a thick haze of local beliefs, distorts her worldview, deprives her of her will, and binds her to herself.Chance brings her into contact with a Singer who is a stranger to this place, a charismatic and wayward woman. She strongly believes that she can change Pascal's life. As a wedding gift, she offers to take her on a trip. How will this strange friendship turn out? And will Pascal be able to free herself from the imposed obligations and choose herself? The novel "Iskus" was longlisted for the Lyceum Award in 2023."A bright, brilliantly written novel about loneliness and escape. About freedom of choice and just about freedom. It's just impossible to believe that this is a debut." — Marina Stepnova, a writer who is "Unusual, wild, addictive, and ultimately magical." — Maya Kucerskaya, writer of The Vicious Circle of Unforgiveness and Dislike. It is this conflict that provides the energy of the text." — Olga Slavnikova, writer
