Notes from the Underground is Dostoevsky's overture to his Pentateuch; the novel expresses the great insights of the artist-thinker; here, for the first time in Russian literature, the foundations of the philosophy of existentialism are formulated. "Notes from the Underground" is a story of precisely posed questions and precisely found intonations. Pain permeates the hero's word, it beats in the rapid changes of his moods, in endless agitations, in painful experiences and in unsolvable dead ends.
