Badgers Drift is a quiet English village with a vicar, a local clumsy doctor, and a good old teacher, Miss Simpson, who is found dead one morning. This sudden death haunts her close friend Miss Bellringer, who stubbornly bores the police with requests to open an investigation. And it is when Chief Inspector Barnaby takes up the case that Badgers-drift reveals his true identity — one by one, long-forgotten murders, adultery, jealousy, rivalry, espionage and blackmail come up. Will Barnaby be able to unravel the tangle of secrets faster than the killer chooses the next victim?

The combination of violent crimes, humor and idyllic nature brought Inspector Barnaby fame not only in the pages of Caroline Graham's detectives, but also in the film adaptation of "purely English murders" with John Nettles in the title role.
