Dictators are ready to use any means to maintain their power, from assassinations and repression to Internet trolling and surveillance systems. With these tools, autocratic regimes not only oppress and rob their own citizens, but also exert influence on liberal states. In her new book, journalist and writer Ann Applebaum explains how this happens, why the democratic world helps autocrats, willingly or unwittingly, and what can be done to prevent them from winning.
