Requiem for a Dream was first published in 1978. The book tells the story of four New Yorkers who, unable to stand the difference between dreams of an ideal life and the real world, seek solace in illusory ersatz substitutes. The main character of the novel, according to the author, is Addiction, and the book itself is a manifesto of the triumph of Addiction over the human spirit. This is a requiem for all those who gave up their lives for the rainbow illusion and lost a Person in themselves. The film adaptation of "Requiem for a Dream" took place in 2001.
