Moments frozen in lines where every word is weighty, and pauses speak more than words. Hokku is taught to see beauty in detail: to hear the chirping of birds, to feel the sunrise, to observe everyday life, to drown in the rustle of rice fields. Try to experience the changing seasons and catch the moon rising in the summer heat. There are no unnecessary words here, just life itself. The art of seeing the great in the small! In this collection, along with the profound philosophy of the great Matsuo Basho, you will discover the subtle lyrics of his talented students — Kikaku, Ransetsu, Sampu and Keraya, as well as rare poems by masters of poetic schools. All the works are presented in classical translations by Vera Markova, which have become an academic standard.
