Большинство эссе были написаны на английском языке и вошли в авторские сборники «Less Than One» («Меньше единицы») и «On Grief and Reason» («О скорби и разуме»).

The book includes selected essays by Joseph Brodsky from 1976 to 1995. In them, the poet recalls his childhood and youth, his hometown and close people, shares his impressions of the events of his life in exile, and reflects on the place of literature in the modern world. Most of the essays were written in English and included in the author's collections "Less Than One" and "On Grief and Reason". The rarely published "The Writer is a Lonely Traveler..." (1972) and "Isaiah Berlin at eighty" (1989) are added to them.
