Grandma by Bozhena Nemtsova (1820-1862) is the most famous and frequently published book in the Czech Republic. By the end of the 19th century, it had already become a symbol of Czech culture. The plot of the story is very simple: Grandma Madeleine leaves her village and comes to her daughter to help her with the housework and babysit her grandchildren. The children immediately fell in love with the kind grandmother, who knows many amazing stories, traditions and beliefs and personally met with Emperor Joseph himself! They are happy to listen to her stories about the past, take part in all the holidays and learn from their grandmother's intelligence and patience. The popularity of the story "Grandma" in the Czech Republic can hardly be overestimated (its characters are even printed on banknotes), however, it is well known outside the country as well — the story has been translated into 20 languages and has been filmed several times. In this edition, the text is presented in a new translation with illustrations by the remarkable Czech artist Adolf Kashpar (1877-1934).
