In the old Pentland House mansion, portraits of rugged New England high society hang on the walls of an endless gallery. These were the true rulers of the city of Durham and its surroundings, unattainable in their greatness. The current generation of the Pentland family is trying their best to preserve this reputation, but their world is rapidly declining. Olivia Pentland is about to turn forty. She can hardly stand her prim husband, their son is terminally ill, and their daughter is in love with a notorious young man. Olivia feels that the autumn of her life has already arrived, and soon winter will come. Will she have time to learn what true happiness is? Perhaps her cousin, the brash, extravagant, red-haired Sabine Callender, who suddenly returned from Europe, knows the answer to this question.…The novel "Early Autumn" by the famous American writer Louis Bromfield was published in 1926 and brought the author international fame. A year later, the novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. For the first time in Russian!
