"Dr. Faustus" is a novel by the outstanding German writer Thomas Mann, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. In this book, the eternal story of a genius who sold his soul to the devil is transferred to the first half of the 20th century. Composer Adrian Leverkuhn, a brilliant madman, sees himself as a second Faust, chosen and cursed, and builds his own life so that it resembles an old legend. In his attempts to gain fame and immortality, Leverkun repeats the fate of his country: the novel, begun during World War II and completed shortly after its end, became a parable about the historical fate of Germany in the 20th century. Mann admitted that Leverkunen, a man who "carries all the pain of the era," was his favorite character, and the writer called this book "the most intimate confession."
