The book of short stories by Vitaly Simutkin takes the reader to the Karelian Isthmus of the 1970s - to the village of Gromovo, the former Finnish Sakkola, where the future author, a two-year-old and bird lover, came on vacation to his family. In the center of the story is Grandfather Vitaly: an aircraft designer in a Yesenin coat, who smoked a pipe and knew every forest path. Next to her is Grandmother Tamara, who survived the Leningrad blockade and learned to take everything she needed from nature with cheerful efficiency. The colorful world of childhood comes to life here, full of discoveries and harmless mischief. It includes rescuing a forest hedgehog, spending the night in a hayloft with thunder, watching a gypsy camp, searching for bumblebee honey, and playing dangerous games with a collective farm bull. Behind a series of funny and touching stories, the outgoing village lifestyle emerges - free, generous, sometimes harsh, but based on trust, mutual assistance, and attention to the living world. This is a prose about how the simplest things - the taste of birch sap, the smell of a melted stove, the voices of relatives - become a measure of happiness for many years to come. The book opens the family chronicle conceived by the author; its continuation is "Youth in Yaskisa".
