In a quiet and picturesque English village, where people are still recovering from the effects of the First World War, peace has been irretrievably disrupted. The brutal killer took the lives of almost the entire family, and the only witness, a girl hiding under the bed, cannot speak from the shock she has experienced. Scotland Yard sends Inspector John Madden, an experienced war detective, to investigate the case. The local police believe that this is a failed robbery, but Madden realizes that the answer lies much deeper. He seeks help from a local doctor, Dr. Helen Blackwell, and as the spark between them turns into an all-consuming fire, the killer gets closer and closer... "River of Darkness" is the first book in the famous retro detective series about Inspector John Madden.
