Many people know of Nikolai Gogol as a great Russian writer. But not much is known of his philosophical and journalistic prose, where he talks about the path of Russia, about its history, culture, people, faith. Some works from this book was caused hot debate during the life of the author, and, though many years have passed, they still give food for thought. Rarely published philosophical and journalistic works not only show a new side of Gogol-writer, and open Gogol-philosopher. The collection is supplemented by the writer's correspondence with contemporaries and part of the work of D. S. Merezhkovsky, "Gogol. Creativity, life and religion."
