Mr. Bliss is driving his new car for the first time to visit his friends the Dorkinses. And, of course, there is no escaping the adventures. Here is a wheelbarrow of cabbage in the middle of the road, there is a cart with bananas, and in the forest, there are three bears. But not all adventures end with the journey. What is waiting for Mr. Bliss at home and what kind of crowd is coming to him? All of this is told in J. R. R. Tolkien’s illustrated fairy tale, which was born out of the author’s own adventures in his first car, purchased in 1932. The prototypes of the bears were the teddy bears of Tolkien’s sons. And he named two of the characters aft er the two heroes of his The Lord of the Rings. Moreover, Mr. Tolkien himself made the illustrations for this book, linking the story to the pictures, and often as if commenting on them directly.
