FINALIST OF THE CHINESE SOJI SHIMADA AWARD.Fifteen years ago, at night, during a severe typhoon, the entire island of Peace and all its inhabitants disappeared. Locals claim that there was a monster from ancient Chinese legends....Of all the inhabitants of the island, only the young Shen Ko survived, who was staying with his grandmother that night on the neighboring island of Joy. So it was thought until now. Until a man was rescued at sea... and it turned out to be another inhabitant of the island of Peace, who disappeared fifteen years ago.Amazed by this news, Shen Ko takes a break from the final of the international chess tournament and goes to the places of his childhood. He has only three days to face the ghosts of the past and finally find out what happened to his family. But as soon as Shen Ko sails to the island of Joy, people will start dying around one by one..."The main character, Shen Ko, could have turned out to be a great detective, but he chose to become a chess player. At first, you don't like him, but as you read, you understand more about why he is like this and why he is destined to unravel this tangle of old mysteries. The mystery of the island's disappearance, the cycle of events unfolding in a matter of days — the story keeps you in suspense, forcing you to wonder until the very end what happened then and how the whole island could disappear without a trace." — Olga Nesterova, editor,"The main character of The Island of Peace is a talented go player named Shen Ko, who is trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of a small island and his parents who lived on it. He is assisted by a childhood friend and part-time local policeman.Shen Ko's return from Shanghai to his small homeland triggered a chain reaction of incredible events: the main character will have to survive attempts on his own life, investigate several murders and uncover many other mysteries: it turned out that murders, blackmail, betrayal of loved ones take place in a calm-looking outback against the backdrop of beautiful seascapes, huge amounts of money are spinning in illegal casinos here and an underground millionaire is hiding, and local fishermen believe in a mystical whale monster.Allusions to medieval history and richness of ethnographic details take the detective beyond the purely criminal investigation, expanding knowledge about China." — Anastasia Korobova, translator
