The book by the British historical scholar Stephen Runciman covers the period from the Third Crusade of the late 12th century to the mid-15th century, when the crusading movement finally came to naught. Runciman tells the story of the bitter century that followed Saladin's conquest of Jerusalem, the brief period of the revival of the Frankish states of Outremer, and the fall of Acre, the last Christian stronghold in the East. The historian also tells of the last Crusades that succeeded or failed to reach the walls of Jerusalem, as well as the rise to power of the Mamluks and the appearance of the Mongols in the Holy Land. In the last chapters, the author summarizes the Crusade era and gives a brief overview of the crafts and arts in Outremer.
