Helen Franklin, an inconspicuous Englishwoman, lives in Prague, makes a living by translating, and has been keeping a terrible secret for twenty years. Her secret, it would seem, is destined to remain in the past, but everything changes when through Karel, one of her few friends, a strange confession falls into the hands of Helen. When Helen first read the story of Melmoth the Witness, a terrifying figure from ancient legends who was doomed to wander the earth forever and watch people's misdeeds, she was convinced that it was just a fairy tale. But Karel suddenly disappears, and Helen herself discovers that someone is following her, and that's when Melmoth's existence begins to seem less improbable. The famous legend of Melmotte has been stirring the imagination of both readers and writers for centuries. Many generations have read Charles Maturin's classic novel "Melmoth the wanderer", and here is a new version of the great story, and performed by one of the best English writers.
